Nitrogen is a one of the decisive elements in the yield formation of grain crops,rapid and accurate diagnosis of crop nitrogen nutrition status is a prerequisite of precision nitrogen fertilization management,while diagnostic indicators are key factors restricting its development. The critical nitrogen dilution curve is a power function relationship between crop critical nitrogen concentration(the minimum nitrogen concentration required to achieve maximum crop dry matter)and plant dry matter(PDM). The nitrogen nutrition index derived from the dilution curve has been widely used in diagnosing crop nitrogen nutrition status. With the development of research,the critical nitrogen dilution curves based on PDM,leaf dry matter,and leaf area index have been established by the researchers respectively,which improve the efficiency and accuracy of crop nitrogen nutrition diagnosis. This paper reviews the construction of critical nitrogen dilution curves,the influencing factors of curve parameters,the acquisition and application of nitrogen nutrition index for three major grain crops(wheat,maize,rice)in China,and provides theoretical support for the research and application in the future.
