Biochar soil amendment(BSA) has been proposed as a key strategy for enhancing soil carbon sequestrating while mitigating greenhouse gases emission of agro-ecosystem. It could be of great significance to look into the dynamics of soil organic carbon(SOC) in deep soil for reliable assessment of carbon sequestration potential with BSA. Indeed, there were insufficient knowledge of the impact of BSA on deep soil organic carbon dynamics while that on topsoil organic carbon dynamics(particularly on SOC pools and their turnover) had been widely investigated globally. This review overviewed the global trend of SOC sequestration of deep soil, stated sources and stability of SOC in deep soil, summarized the findings of migration down topsoil and thus the potential impact on SOC dynamics in deep soil under BSA. Furthermore, the emerging issues on deep soil SOC dynamics and the fate of biochar derived organic carbon were explored to provide information for future studies related to SOC sequestration and biochar application in agriculture.
